How You Can Find Success with Online Content

Creating online content is no piece of cake. But when you get it right, it’s thrilling.

Getting it right starts with doing your research, toiling over your vocabulary, and experiencing existential dread over the Oxford comma. (That last one varies with each individual.)

Unfortunately creating good content that’s well-written and has the apostrophes in the right places won’t always compel your reader to read the whole thing.

Turning your good idea into great content requires a few extra steps. And it starts with knowing your audience.

Treat Your Audience Like a Blind Date

You’ve been set up by a friend, and you want to make a good impression. So you ask questions and learn about them from your friend. What do they like, what don’t they like. What are they looking for?

Basically, you do your research.

That’s how you want to approach creating a piece of content. Ask yourself, “Who is my audience?”

Who’s reading this piece of content? What are they interested in? What questions are they asking?

Keep your audience on your mind while you’re writing. They’re not there to shower praise on your brilliant prose. They’re reading your content to satisfy their own needs. Learn their pain points and write content to make their lives easier.

Use research to come up with topics for your product or service. Try answerthepublic.com. Type your product or service and the website creates a list of questions based on search queries.

Go to sites like Reddit and Quora and see what questions people have about your subject. Use that information to craft content that presents your unique perspective and highlights your expertise.

(In Your Best Soccer Announcer Voice) Gooooooooooallllllll!!!

After learning about your audience and the topics they’re interested in, it’s time to figure out what you want your audience to do after engaging with your content.

Every piece of content needs to have a goal. You’re working hard to create that webpage, blog article or e-newsletter. You need to a reason for your efforts.

Think about where the piece of content fits into your buyer’s journey. Is it meant to educate and help them in the consideration phase? Or is it meant to advertise a discount on a product and convert sales?

Having a goal and keeping it in mind, will guide your writing process. And it’ll make conversions — especially if you have a great call-to-action.

Sometimes People Need a Nudge

Most of the time, they need an obvious elbow to the side. People need guidance when they’re online. They want large colourful buttons and bold print to tell them what to do next.

Write a clear and compelling call-to-action (CTA) telling the reader what’s next.

You get the idea. Guide your visitor towards fulfilling your content’s goal.

Your content’s goal should align with your business as well as your audience’s goal. Think of them as two sides of the same coin.

Your audience has a problem, and you have the solution. Your content’s job is to show that you’re the one to solve their problem. Then everyone wins!

Get to know your audience, set goals for your content, and write a great call-to-action when you create content and craft your strategy.

Enjoy a piece of cake while you’re at it. Just don’t sit back for too long. You’ve had a great start, more work is coming. But don’t worry — it’ll be worth it.
